JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: LABOUR PARTY OFFICIAL SAYS A TRUTH WE SO RARELY HEAR – SYRIA’S ASSAD HAS POPULAR SUPPORT – SOME FACTS – I COMPARE SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL’S GOVERNMENT IF YOU COUNT ALL THE RESIDENTS LIVING UNDER IT   Leave a comment

“Emily Thornberry claims public support for Syria’s Bashar al-Assad has been ‘underestimated’

“Shadow foreign secretary refuses to denounce Russia for vetoing UN Security Council resolutions”

You bet it has.

He has long had a popular following.

Syria’s Christians, too, regard him as a genuine protector of their rights, and he is.

Syria’s army has remained loyal despite six years of the most horrible war induced by outsiders supporting mercenary armies of fake jihadis to destroy the country.

Until the outsiders decided to start destroying this beautiful land, it was at peace under Assad.

Indeed, when you consider the totality of residents, say, in Israel, including of course the poor Palestinians held in perpetual bondage with no rights and endless abuse, Syria to an objective observer was a better place than Israel, despite all Israel’s blubbering about democracy.

And the series of massacres we see in Gaza underlines that even to a greater extent. This is the third wave of mass killings by the Netanyahu government, and that’s apart from all its hostilities carried out abroad, including being a major player in Syria’s misery.

JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: NEW LEADER OF HAMAS WARNS OF HUMAN CATASTROPHE COMING – NOT A THREAT JUST A TERRIBLE FACT MUCH RESEMBLING WHAT HAPPENED IN RUSSIA WITH COLLAPSE OF USSR   Leave a comment

“Hamas Gaza leader hints at mass breach of Israel border fence as he compares Palestinians to ‘starving tiger’

“Analysis: In his first briefing to foreign press since taking his position, Yahya Sinwar makes clear just how desperate the people of Gaza have become”

He’s only right.

And it’s not a threat.

It just is a reality Israel ignores.

When Russia went into its terrible decline after the fall of the USSR, there was a similar possibility for Europe.

America ignored it, thinking cynically any hurt to Russia was good for America, just the way Israel thinks about Gaza.

But Germany thought very differently at the time and gave billions in assistance to Russia. It was humanitarian, but it was also out of fear of millions of desperate people migrating.

You know, General Dayan, after his victory in Israel’s planned Six Day War conquering the territories still occupied half a century later, said it would be necessary to make the Palestinians miserable so that they would want to leave.

Well, that’s just what Israel has done for all those years, but nowhere more so than in Gaza. Every past Israeli Prime Minister has given desperate thought to getting rid of Gaza, a place which started as a giant refugee camp for people running from Israel’s 1949 terrors. One Israeli Prime Minister was quoted saying he had nightmares over Gaza.

Well, the blood-soaked hands of Netanyahu have made a heroic effort to do what eluded others. Three mass slaughters, an immoral years-long blockade, and a host of unbelievably abusive measures stretching from turning electricity off to spraying large swathes of land with dangerous herbicides.

It is a humanitarian disaster, and the West’s governments just ignore it and let Israel carry right on. Our press and others go on and on about the Rohingya crisis in Burma, and it is a crisis, but here in Gaza we have something just as terrible before our vey eyes, something not being conducted by a junta as in Burma, but by a self-proclaimed democratic government which supposedly adheres to Western principles. A government whose leader repeatedly calls a gang of bloody murderers “the most moral army in the world.”

JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: WRITER SAYS ANTI-SEMITISM ROW IN BRITISH POLITICS IS A DRAMA BUT NOT A CRISIS – WELL YES BUT A DIRTY SHAME IS WHAT IT TRULY IS   1 comment

“Labour’s antisemitism row may be drama, but it’s no crisis”

Indeed, but it is a dirty shame.

We are dealing with national affairs, and a major party has been crippled by ugly and unwarranted name-calling.

Thank you, David Cameron, always a low-life politician, and thank you to the UK’s press for supporting him in the work.

The one advantage is that it all makes Trump’s big mouth look not quite so bad after all.

And those two shameful columns by Jonathan Freedland and Nick Cohen not only ran for days but permitted no replies.

Those columns were the absolute essence of unfair propaganda.

It’s all too wrong for words.

When people criticized the Soviet Union, it did not make them, ipso facto, Russian-haters.

And, indeed, for the worst regime of the last century, National Socialist Germany, criticizing it did not make you a German-hater.

Israel has done many terrible things to the Palestinians, and it makes no effort at all to reach a fair settlement with them.

If that isn’t appropriate for criticism, what is?

Are we to give up all ethics and principles, never saying a word against abuse and new horrors, because something terrible was done to Jewish people three-quarters of a century ago by another party on another continent?

But that criticism does not make you someone who hates Jewish people.

That is absurd logic, and I am pretty sure it is deliberately used by some to cloud matters of real importance.

That is precisely the issue here, yet it is buried by writers like Jonathan Freedland and Nick Cohen and by politicians like David Cameron and the leader of Israel’s Labour Party who even managed to get into the fray.

It’s been an appalling set of orchestrated events, and when the public is treated in this fashion, it only raises suspicions about the intent and purposes and sincerity of all involved.

I would infinitely prefer my politics to deal with all the terrible problems we face and not stoop to this shameful level.

JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: LAW SUIT AGAINST TREASURY DEPARTMENT IN THE MATTER OF FUNDS FLOWING FREELY TO ISRAELI SETTLERS UNLIKELY TO SUCCEED – BUT ISRAEL’S SYSTEMATIC INJUSTICE CERTAINLY WILL END ONE DAY JUST AS THAT OF THE SOVIET UNION ENDED   Leave a comment

The hypocrisy of this flow of funds is stunning.

All Muslim or Arabic institutions transferring money have long been suppressed in the name of fighting terror and despite the fact that many of them actually worked for good causes.

But who on earth behaves more certainly as terrorists than Israel’s “settlers”?

They steal the very land upon which they stand.

They steal the water they drink.

The steal the fields in which they grow crops.

They treat thousands of Palestinians as sub-human, deserving of no rights or respect.

And they not infrequently murder Palestinians.

Of course, the money transfers supporting this horror should be choked off.

But they won’t be.

American policy concerning the region has been driven totally by neo-cons and Israel lobbyists for decades.

I think we’ll just have to wait until what is called Israel today collapses under its own weight, as it certainly will eventually just as the Soviet Union collapsed.

If you think about it, you will see that there is little difference between the behaviors and structure of the Soviet Union and Israel. Perhaps the only major difference is the flow of funds from abroad keeping it afloat, but those funds simply cannot continue forever.

Israel discredits itself daily with excesses, injustices, and refusal to do anything for the Palestinians, leaving millions in misery with no hope for the future, only hoping they eventually will go away. But they won’t go away and their numbers will only grow. Israel’s own behavior towards them will eventually dry up the flood of subsidies from abroad, both public and private, as it sinks in everywhere what a pointlessly destructive enterprise is being sustained.

Many Israelis too will weary of the ugly realities and limits of Israeli life, leaving for better lives elsewhere. It’s just a matter of time.

Fantasy hopes and dreams, whether of a religious or political nature, can only sustain people for so long in the face of daily, grinding realities.

JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: WHY CAN’T THE PALESTINIANS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES ? THE CLEAREST EVIDENCE OF A HUGE AND CONTINUING BIAS IN OUR PRESS   Leave a comment

COMMENT TO CBC RADIO CONCERNING AN INTERVIEW ON SUNDAY EDITION WITH GIDEON LEVY

As liberal-minded and decent-spirited as your Israeli journalist guest of March 29, may be, why can’t the Palestinians speak for themselves?

Are the Palestinians such hopeless children or primitives that they cannot speak for themselves?

Your program has given voice to scores of Israelis and apologists for Israel over the years with barely a sound from the Palestinians, who have many articulate and educated spokespeople.

The bias, extreme bias, just couldn’t be clearer. Even when speaking of the grief Israel has imposed on five million people for half a century, and in violation of countless international laws and agreements and norms, pretty much only Israelis are deemed qualified to comment.

Actually your interview today could be seen as a new form of reverse-propaganda in that it advertises reasonableness amongst Israelis, telling people: So don’t worry about the endless abuse and injustice, such good folks in Israel will make things right, eventually, and you can feel good just knowing they are there.

Michael, despite your general liberal-mindedness, your broadcasting practices on this terrible, longstanding issue of utterly-debased human rights makes you part of the problem, not the solution.
